A Guide to Nairobi City Stadium

Nairobi City Stadium is Kenyas oldest stadium, and has hosted some of Kenya’s greatest epic football battles. Set in the populous Eastland of Nairobi, the centre is linked to growth and development of most of Kenya’s football celebrities. It is the home ground for the country’s top football club, Gor Mahia.

The Nairobi City Stadium in Kenya is a multi-purpose stadium found in the eastern part of Nairobi city approximately 2.8 Kilometers from the Kencom bus stage in Nairobi. The Nairobi City Stadium in the city of Nairobi which borders Jogoo Road, Lusaka Road and Kaloleni Estate in Nairobi was established in the 1960s and is the third largest stadium in Kenya after Nyayo stadium in Nairobi and the Safaricom Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi (formerly the Moi International Sports Centre). The Stadium is owned by the Nairobi city county in Kenya. The Nairobi city stadium was previously known by various names like: African Stadium, Donholm Road Stadium and Jogoo Road Stadium in Kenya.
The Nairobi City main stadium has a standard football pitch in Kenya with artificial turf and is approved by the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA).The football pitch is mainly used as a soccer stadium in Kenya by teams playing in the various leagues in Kenya. The major soccer clubs in Kenya that use the Nairobi city stadium as their home ground are: Gor Mahia football club in Kenya, Posta Rangers football club in Kenya and Mahakama football club in Kenya. The seating capacity of Nairobi City Stadium in Kenya is 15,000 people.

It was the principal stadium in Nairobi until the 1980s when Nyayo National Stadium and Moi International Sports Centre were built. It is used mostly for football matches and is the home stadium of the traditional Gor Mahia and some other local clubs.
Probably the highest profile athletics competition held at Nairobi City Stadium was Jomo Kenyatta memorial meeting in 1979. International athletes like Edwin Moses, Alberto Salazar and Henry Rono participated.
According to press reports, City stadium is set to have the first artificial turf in Kenya. The project will be funded by FIFA . This synthetic turf pitch, called Xtreme Turf, is manufactured and being installed by ACT Global Sports.
Besides hosting Football league games in Kenya, the Nairobi City Stadium hosts other events like: sports tournaments in Nairobi e.g. the COPA Coca-Cola, Music concerts in Kenya etc.

How to get to the Nairobi City Stadium

By road: Nairobi city Stadium is approximately 2.8 Kilometers from the Kencom bus stage in Nairobi. From the Kencom bus stage in the Nairobi CBD, one can walk via Moi Avenue, Haile Selassie Avenue and Landhies Road. The Nairobi City Stadium is to the right hand side immediately after joining Jogoo Road from the city stadium roundabout. Through public means, one can use the various Matatus plying the Jogoo Road route. These Matatus going to Nairobi City Stadium in Kenya include Umoja Estate bound Matatus from Ronald Ngala street in Nairobi, 36 (Dandora) picked from Muthurwa bus stage in Nairobi, 58(Buruburu) picked from Accra Road/Tom Mboya junction in Nairobi, 10(Maringo) from Muthurwa bus station in Nairobi among many others.

Anyone interested in accessing the Stadium must be keen not to miss the Nairobi City Stadium entry gate due to the many stalls that are located outside the stadium. These stalls near the Stadium provide a shopping opportunity for second hand clothes, shoes, fruits and vegetables in Kenya but the downside is that they consume up space that would be useful for parking in Nairobi City Stadium.
